About a month or so ago, I approached a couple of my friends at the City of Denton about having a fundraiser at the end of the summer. My goal was to raise money for a women and children’s shelter, preferably one that needed a little extra help with awareness and funds. They told me about Serve Denton and the Wheeler Center, which is just getting off the ground…a huge project with humble beginnings that are going on right *now*. Renovating a building in downtown Denton just around the corner from my studio, one of their primary functions will be to offer immediate shelter to woman and children (not fleeing from abuse, that’s already addressed by Friends of the Family in Denton). It goes beyond the roof over their heads, however…and this is what I’m so loving about it all. The Wheeler Center will also house a free health clinic, mentoring, parenting and education classes, tutoring in a certified Ready Start program, and outdoor recreation. The children will have a safe room to play and learn while their moms are getting these critical services. The project will take a lot to get off the ground, but every bit helps, and I want to target the donations from our fundraiser to something specific – stocking the children’s play/classroom. I have been given an itemized list of the things they will be providing – from tables and chairs to books, puzzles and toys. I hope we can do some serious good for this worthy cause!
So the details! On Saturday, August 4th, from 8 AM to 7 PM, I will be shooting ALL DAY with no appointments necessary. Please come by and bring your kids for a quick 5 minute classic black and white individual (no sibling pictures) session. You will receive a beautiful 8×10 print (to be delivered after the event so I have time to personally edit the images). The focus is the child’s face, simple and classic and celebrating each child as an individual. Cupcakes will be provided for after the portrait session by Jenn’s Sweet ‘N Sassy Bakery, and representatives from Serve Denton will be helping out to talk about the project. The requested donation is $20 per child. I will also be offering cd’s with 4 images from the session for $75 (my normal individual image price is $85), but there is absolutely NO obligation to purchase anything from the session.
In one day, my goal is to raise at least $2,000 for the Wheeler Center’s children’s room. I truly think that we can do it together, and what an awesome feeling that will be!! Please help me get the word out by sharing on your facebook, twitter, or just by word of mouth! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment, use the contact form on my blog, or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
